Info on winter motorcycle riding?
I’m wondering if there is any added danger when riding in winter. Provided the right layers of cold weather gear are worn and there is no snow, sleet or ice can cold weather effect riding a motorcycle? Are there any mechanical malfunctions to be concerned about? Traction because of the cold?
I’m a new rider and I’m buying a bike. I’m trying to figure out if it is going to be possible to ride my bike to work in the winter. It is about a 20 minute drive and we have pretty mild winters here in New Mexico.

Cold can and will affect the rider’s response time.
Heavy gear will also.
As for the motorcycle, it’s likely to build condensation inside the motor, which will affect your oil. More frequent changes are strongly recommended.
Cold will affect the tires. The rubber is stiffer, and has less grip (traction).
Temps near or below freezing can cause ice to form where it’s not expected.

One of the worst: Car drivers do not expect to see motorcycles in the winter. The ones that actually look for us in winter will be surprised. Surprised drivers can act unexpectedly.
