Advice for an energy gel century bike ride?

I'm training for a century bike ride (100 miles in a day) in late this year and wonder about the use of energy gels. Are they effective or are more of a trick? If they work, what do you think are good? Where there a good place for them? Also, I would appreciate any advice you have other nutrition based on his experience as an endurance athlete. Thanks

I in Most agree with Michael C, except that the gels do indeed get into your system faster than solid foods. Yes, they are convenient, and that is a big factor in why many people use, but also absorbed faster and easier on your system. On a long trip or a fast pace travel, some people may get the cramps and loss of energy after eating solid food. Gels and fluids will help prevent this. Because it can be rapidly absorbed, is not likely to get undermined by the effects of her body with blood (and oxygen) to begin the digestion process necessary for solid foods. One trick to avoid all this mess, or not using gel, is eating the heart during the last 2 or 3 days before your trip, then grab a snack every 30 minutes or less the trip. Small portions and lots of hydration will help to keep going. (Let emphasize * LOT * of the hydration of that!) In terms of gel brands go, Accel Gel has some small advantages with their protein included. Nearly all other gel is a mixture of sugar and some complex carbohydrates and that you can shop for the taste. Home sampling now and know that you like. Also, you can buy bottles Hammergel quarter along with a refillable bottle. Much thus cheaper, easier to manage on the bike, and can suck as much or as little as you like at any given time.
