This city with its open spaces and broad streets is the Oudtshoorn. The city stretches along both banks of the river Grobbelaars, a tributary of the River Oliphant, and its fertile valleys are encompassed by the Swartberg mountains to the north and the Outeniqua Mountains to the south. Dry summers and warm, and sunny days Winter makes it the ideal breeding ground for the most majestic of flightless birds – synonymous with Oudtshoorn – the ostrich.
Climate:
The region is hot and dry in summer and has plenty of sunshine in winter.
Winter nights can be very cold, sometimes it snows in the mountains.
Turning the coastal part of this range, the vegetation is lush and green, but once on the crest of the mountain, vegetation and climate changes rapidly.
At the top of the mountain pass that often introduce a large bank of fog or low cloud and out-side the landscape has changed Oudtshoorn.
No more mountains, but the low hills that stretch for miles covered with Karoo bush and rocks.
This desert area is dry and hot.
Attractions in the area:
The Cango Caves: One of the worlds great natural wonders sculptured by nature through the centuries. It is located near the old Klein Karoo Oudtshoorn. Mysterious and breathtaking limestone formations in a wide variety of natural colors, a subterranean wonderland. Guided visits day.
Ostriches: Amidst the 400 ostrich farms surrounding the town, 3 have distinguished themselves worthy to be called "show farms". Are exposed to this kind of exotic birds, the largest in the world. Guided tours available.
Crocodile: the look with fear of the slithering reptiles species from all the world. Imagine … More than 400 crocodiles and alligators in their prehistoric unattractiveness. They're being bred here and are very friendly, as long as not too close!
The Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK) annual meeting in March / April, more than 100 000 lovers of the various arts, for a week of dance, film, cabaret, classical music, comedy, contemporary music, outdoor concerts, plays, literary art and poetry. A momentous event, enjoying international sponsorship.
Taste local wines and excellent cuisine restaurants – meals which could include ostrich – all exquisitely available to suit all tastes.
Cheetahs: A highly successful breeding station of this threatened species. . . -one of only two in the southern hemisphere. One of the most prominent examples of Eco-tourism in the world and an excellent mix of conservation and tourism. You can get yourself photographed embracing a cheetah cub, animal Fastest on land.
Rivers & Falls: Numerous rivers, streams and falls have their origins in the surrounding Swartberg, Outeniqua, Kamanassie ridges. Waterfalls abound, and the visitor is lucky enough to visit two examples at the Vrede safely and Meiringspoort falls.
Hiking and Biking: The eco-tourism, and flourishing in outdoor life, alike, face a wide range of challenging opportunities. Hiking and biking trails are in abundance. Make your choice from lush subtropical and semiarid. You will leave fulfilled!
