What kind of bike should I travel across America!?

My brother and I are riding across the country this country. It is becoming a surly. I have a Trek 1000 with Sora components, which I doubt can make the trip. What kind of bike I have, and from where. In addition, my budget is limited to about $ 1200.

If your bike is in good condition, there should be no problem making the trip. I am curious however, how will be carrying your luggage. Does your Trek have mounting points for a rack that can carry bags? How much luggage will you transport? If you have a support vehicle to carry your things, you will be fine. If you have to carry everything you need with you, something like touring bike Trek 520 might be a good choice for your trip.
