How much to ship a bike across the country?

I would like to send a bike from the east coast to California. What would be the cheapest/best method of doing so? I went to UPS, but their cost was as much as the bike itself. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cheapest is usually to send it by bus, like Greyhound… it cost me something like $35 when I did it a few years back. Not sure if it’s changed. Just make sure you have someone there to pick it up when the bus comes!
