Raising Money for a Bike Tour?

Does anyone have any idea of how to take donations online or raise money for a solo cross country TransAm bike tour? I got my budget, route and expenses all planned out…now i just have a year left to save and raise money. Any ideas?

To take donations online, you’ll probably want a few things: a myspace page, a face-book page, and a pay-pal account. Your social/networking pages should have a section devoted to the tour, your plans, etc. You might also list some past races/events you’ve completed, just to give potential donors the feeling that you know what you’re doing.

If you have favorite forums, drop a line or two on them; don’t be pushy, because people don’t like begging, especially on the internet where anonymity allows one to be rude in response. So be subtle & classy.

Also, on your emails, you could attach a signature that directs people to your networking pages; don’t attach a sig asking for money, but rather one that says “go here and see what I’m doing next summer.” Once they get there, they’ll see the paypal link for donations.

Finally, break out the walkin’ shoes. Hit up local business around town and simply ask for donations in return for printing up a shirt carrying all their logos and such. Basically, turn yourself into a two-wheel Nascar racer.

Above all, be aware that times are tight; people are less likely to part with cash, so use some salesmanship. Let them know they’re doing a good thing, raising money for charity, etc. Be sincere, sell the hope, and the money will take care of itself.
