What is the best fitness equipment on the property?

I am interested in buying a bike or elliptical or cross trainer or a treadmill. I wonder that will give me the best results and which brands are good? Also if you've rented a piece of fitness equipment before it's worth compared by buying it out? I want to lose weight, improve fitness and tone muscles. I can go walking, jogging, etc, as I have 3 small children. Need something I can do at home.
