Many people who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, or those with family or friends with the condition have heard, no doubt, the letters "CPAP". The acronym stands for "continuous positive pressure" and is one of the most common and least invasive treatments prescribed to treat certain conditions of the sleep breathing disorders, including sleep apnea (1).

In most cases, treatment with CPAP involves wearing a mask based silicone that is made using a flexible tube to a machine that regulates the flow of air to the mask. The air flow is constant inflation pressure as the tissues of the upper airway to prevent airway collapse. The mechanism that prevents airway collapse is sometimes referred to as splint a "tire". (2) The collapse of the upper airway tissue is called obstructive sleep apnea, and is the most common form of apnea sleep.
The prevention of airway collapse provides a drastic reduction of "apnea" (3) and "hypoapneic" (4) events. With the reduction of apnea and hypopnea, the user experiences a higher and more stable CPAP level of oxygen in the blood overnight, allowing the user to achieve a cycle deeper sleep which results in improved health and wakefulness during the day.

CPAP or continuous positive airway pressure, was developed by Colin Sullivan and his associates in 1980. (5) When a group of sleep researchers gathered at a symposium held in Sydney, the result was a discussion about the nature of sleep-related with the collapse of the airways. Researchers are actively addressing the issue of whether the collapse of the airway was an "asset" or "passive" the situation (6). Basically, I wanted to know if the airway was collapsing on their own, or was a response of the body in the airways were forcibly closed. At that stage of sleep research, Sullivan and his colleagues knew that the collapse of the airway that was happening, but not understanding the mechanism.

One afternoon, Dr. Sullivan was working with a patient who was scheduled for surgical treatment to correct the apnea, and decided to run A preliminary study on the patient using some of the experimental equipment that was out there. The test proved successful in keeping the airway open during sleep that Sullivan concluded immediately that the issue of "active" versus "passive" collapse of the airway was in fact established themselves as a "passive" situation. He was able to demonstrate that they actually could make the events of apnea and was adjusting the settings pressure. When setting the highest pressure, remained an open airway and apnea events disappeared. Moreover, when adjusting the pressure downward apnea events returned. Dr. Sullivan concluded that he had found something of great experimental value. It was not until later that he would realize the enormity the scale of its discovery.

Within a year, Dr. Sullivan had joined with another engineer and began to improve the design of his first machines CPAP. The initial machines developed by Sullivan and his colleagues were closely related to a nasal CPAP mask connected to several "fan motors, some of them from the vacuum applications, and some of them taken from a dental appliance. The "mask" and "played" is attached to the face using different methods. In some circumstances, Dr. Sullivan used a silicone elastomer as a glue to attach the mask interface and the inside a bicycle helmet. Over time, technology has improved dramatically, and in 1985 were "more than 100 patients at his home in therapy CPAP. "(7)
