A route for a bike ride in NYC?

I’m coming to NYC with my boyfriend, and we’d like to rent bikes for a day. Any ideas on a safe and interesting route we can take, besides inside Central park?
(preferably starting on Central park, where the bike rentals are).

My friend, the best places to bike in New York City without getting hit by a car will be Hudson River Park and Riverside Park, both on the West Side of Manhattan, and Central Park.
