Teaching An Adult To Ride A Bike – How? Lessons Available?

My wife grew up in NYC and never had the opportunity to learn to ride a bike. I love to ride my bike and would like for her to learn but she is afraid of riding in the streets and on sidewalks because of the cars. In addition, she continues to struggle even with adult training wheels. Are there clubs available that might teach her? We live on Long Island in New York. Any suggestions would be great!

First, take the pedals off the bike and lower the seat so that she can firmly place her feet on the ground while seated comfortably on the bike.

Next, go to a park or somewhere relatively open.. If you can find somewhere that has a nice easy slope to it, that’s even better. Starting at the top of the slope, have her sit on the bike and use her feet to accelerate or brake as she sees fit while she rolls down the slope. As she gets more comfortable, encourage her to lift her feet off the ground and put them atop the crank arms and to use the hand brakes to slow herself. Once she’s gotten comfortable with balancing and turning and stopping the bike, put the pedals back on and that part will be second nature… No one ever has a hard time pedaling, the balance is what takes the work to learn.
