Lake Champlain is the largest body of freshwater in the U.S. after the Great Lakes, and 120 miles long and an average depth of 400 and 12 miles, everything about him is impressive. But more impressive than its size is its unspoiled beauty. In a state already known for conservation and back to nature vacation, Lake Champlain is the destination secret to a growing number of tourists from New England.

Here's my pick of the five destinations and attractions in the region of Lake Champlain, when you visit …

Island hoping VERMONT STYLE:

The northern half of Lake Champlain has a wonderful mosaic of the Islands. The largest of the islands are connected and the mainland of Vermont on Route 2 in the south and Route 78 in the north. Following the Route 2 south to north, will take you through the picturesque people of South Hero, Grand Isle, North Hero and Alburg a few miles from the Canadian border.

The Lake Champlain Islands Land flat to gentle hills, which means bicycling is a quick way to get a holiday. In most areas that have views of Vermont's Green Mountains to the east and the Adirondacks to New York west.

BURLINGTON – Champlain Lake City

Although Montpelier is the capital of Vermont, Burlington the largest city, located on the shore Lake Champlain, with the stunning backdrop to the east of the Green Mountains.

Activities include ECHO in Burlington, Vermont, the world's aquarium Lake class and science center on the waterfront, Lake Champlain Chocolates factory tour, where you can see these famous chocolates made right before your eyes, and Ethan Allen Homestead and Museum. Complete your day with a train ride through the beautiful Champlain Valley in the Green Mountain Railroad. The train winds through rolling Shelburne green meadows and back.

Cruises on Lake Champlain

Two cruise ships operating in Lake Champlain in the summer – "The Spirit of Ethan Allen III "holds about 500 people and the" Northern Lights "has room for 150 people. Both boats leave the docks at Burlington.

While cruise you can listen as tour guides discuss the revolutionary rich past Lake Champlain region, the importance of Native Americans of this area and interesting facts about the lake. But center stage at each crossing is the breathtaking views of the islands and surrounding mountains of Vermont and New York.

FOR WRECKS DIVE

If wreck diving is your passion then in Lake Champlain have come to the right place. The lake is considered by many divers have the best collection of historic shipwrecks in North America.

Eight of these remains are preserved for the enjoyment of divers, and under the watchful eye of Lake Champlain, Underwater Historic Preserve. These residues provide a unique experience for diving the northeast. The types of waste vary from horse to ferry boats channel, with some located close to both Vermont and New York, the shores of Lake. Dive Experience required ranges from beginner to advance.

Lake Champlain MARITIME MUSEUM

Lake Champlain Maritime Museum Vergennes is near, and is a wonderful way to experience the historical importance of the lagoon. The museum of the Cuenca port provides an opportunity to take a step back in time as you explore a Revolutionary War gunboat, see artisans using traditional construction skills naval, and learning about nautical life in the Champlain Valley during the conflicts of the 18th century.

The museum is self-guided, but has plenty of demonstrations to you to stop and see how they walk.

State Parks on Lake Champlain

More than 50 Vermont State Parks, and the area of Lake Champlain, contains twelve of the state parks, including: Alburg Dunes, Knight Point, Sandy Bar, Burton Island, Grand Isle, Knight Island, North Hero, and Woods, on the island of the chain Island of Lake Champlain.
