Biking Tours

Can you put thicker wheels a road bike to use for travel?
I have a Specialized Sequoia bike and wheels are 700 x 25c. Is it possible to put 700 x 32c wheels of this bike? I need a touring bike, so I wondered if the bike would be appropriate if I had thicker tires.
Hey Maddie, for the sake of less confusion, I will assume your Sequoia is the recent (2004-2009) version and not an earlier model. The factor main limiting the maximum size tire on a road bike is the effective range of the brake caliper. Today, road brake calipers are essentially in the following ranges: 39-49mm, 47-57mm and 57-73mm. Sometimes, these ranges are called standard, long and extra long or short, standard and long term. Most bicycles road on the market today have 39-49mm brake reach. These bikes are typically limited to a maximum of 25c tire, although a little less "Racey" frameworks can tolerate a 28C tire. Regardless, this race-oriented bikes, and most cyclists in these bikes feel that tires 23C give them the trip more efficient. Fortunately, the Sequoia is not a race bike. Unfortunately, the specifications specialized bicycle brakes with generic no name. I suppose you have no brand calipers 47-57mm range. If that's the case, you should be able to get a 32c tire there, but this depends largely how closely Mfr put the rear brake bridge of the rim and how tight the spaces are in the holder. You can take steps to a steel metric ruler to determine the actual scope of brakes and the amount of space available. You can also buy a 32c tire of your choice and mount in the front, and then back to see if it will work (If it is too tight, back tire unridden). Or you can take your bike to the LBS and ask them what would be the largest tire that could fit in it. Some Reflections On those larger tires: not everyone travel tire wider, and not all needs of a wider tire Tourer. The greatest cyclists and those who carry heavy loads, while the tour is better with a wide tire. Wider tires are also good when you go to find the unpaved roads or roads are in poor condition. If you is an average sized person riding a great terrace with a lighter load (2-max knapsack), also would be fine with 28c tires. Some riders Tour with 23C and 25C tires. Not me, but fortunately not. Food for thought. As for the tires, please note that nominal measures may be very different from the measurements real, the reality often is that the tire measures smaller than the size indicated. Therefore, it is possible that MFR 32c fits very well … possibly defenses, too … while another 32c MFR does not fit all. If not set on a particular tire, and you will not be making a tour of issue, I suggest that you take a look at Schwalbe Marathon Supreme. It has excellent puncture resistance, an ideal profile, excellent traction in rolling performance wet and dry surfaces, and impressive. They're not cheap (about $ 120/set), but the tires are very nice. They account for easy folding on / Off and are relatively light weight, too. The Supreme 32c actually measures 30mm, so it's another tire that is slightly smaller than the nominal size. Other brands Schwalbe Marathon tires for expedition travel, off-road, and lighter duty. For a less expensive, less bomb-proof tires, you can take a look at pasela quality wheels, the pasela TG, or T-Serv. Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase is a very hard tire for the money (about $ 80/pr), although not as comfortable as the others. Others to consider would be specialized armadillos or one of the squares of Continental tires. If you're on tour, buy the best tire you can afford. His Sequoia should make the bike very well for almost any trip expedition. It has relaxed geometry and upright riding position-ish, and pods for stability and the removal of pack, and arrange for FR / RR rear fenders and a grill. And if you mount defenses, remember that it still restricts plus the max tire size.
