Core training?

So i'v read that crunches really do nothing to their core. Since the bike (not cycling races, but usually around 7-14 miles per hour) almost everyday on my mountain bike (been doing for four consecutive weeks to date), I realized Strong core muscles that are necesarry. So what exercises are out there? Please know that I'm practically broke, so I can not buy videos, go to classes, equipment purchases, etc. .. "The rocking aid baseball bat?
