Nikon D40 with a Sigma 10-20mm to shoot and jump snowboard mountain dirt bikes?

I am new to SLR and D40 considering buying a used one sigma-20mm lens 10. Do you think this would be a good camera / lens if you intend to shoot snowboarding (Riding Park), jumping the dirt (BMX) and skateboarding? I know that most journals use a fisheye lens, but is this something you can do with photoshop and some time later? If you believe that other objectives you should consider, please recommend! What work and be a great lens for such shots. The only problem is that it would not be able to auto focus, because the D40 has no autofocus motor in it. Nikon 12-24mm has a focus motor in it IIRC but watch spending $ 800 here. The D50 has a motor Focus on what the larger body, but you may have trouble finding one they do not make them anymore.
