Cold Weather Biking Shoes
Seattle area – Everett, Mukilteo, etc weather?
I’m moving up there on Thanksgiving (right on the edge of Everett and Mukilteo, but apparently it will officially be Mukilteo.) I’m selling my car and will need to walk my daughter to school. We’re from Las Vegas, so we might get cold easily, lol. Do you think we could ride bikes to her school? Can you do that if it snows or do we need to walk? Does it snow every year? Do you think I need to buy us snow boots or will regular shoes be okay? (We’re nearly a mile from her middle school and not eligible for bus transportation; I already checked.) Do people normally wear scarves, hats, full on winter gear or do we not need to buy all that (money is a little tight.)
Seattle isn’t terribly cold like the mid-west. However, it is quite wet and that lends to a different type a misery. And for a Jr. Higher, to be fashionable/cool will clash with common sense rain-wear.
You won’t need to ride a bike. If your child goes to Voyager or Explorer, the sidewalks are really nice around there. If she’s going to Olympic View the hills are severe and the bike paths are nonexistent. Plus lugging books around, bike locks, damage, etc.
You won’t need snow boots for school, but they are good to have for playing in the snow. The sidewalks will be wet and usually, since it only snows once or twice, school will probably be closed those days.
I wouldn’t jump into any clothing expenses right away. She’ll need a warm coat, a couple sweaters and she’ll tell you what she needs to “fit in”. I work with people who wear shorts all year round. The weather here is pretty mild.
If you’re in the Casino Rd. area, I have a friend who organizes a “homework club”. I think they provide other services as well which could be a help for a newcomer.
