Before going out across America on a bike ride you need to know that even if you are an ardent, hardcore, no prisoners, kicking, but cyclist need to plan ahead and have a decent route under consideration. Not all two-lane highways are safe and all roads are not equal.

Choose the wrong ways and will damage your bike with potholes, a lot of floors and dangerous or even disastrous incidents with cars. Well, I have not scared yet. Good, maybe you can do this, then, after all? This is a major undertaking for cross-country bike and so I need to know.

In considering across the country through the lower elevations, CA, AZ, NM, TX (oh yah, let me tell you about Texas, BIG), LA, MS, AL and GA need to plan the most direct routes with the highest shoulder to avoid incidents and accidents. You also have to choose roads that have less debris to prevent flats.

When Alabama crossing I suggest a route that I like? The route begins in Meridian, MS and ends in Chattanooga, TN. This is a diagonal northwest across the state. This is a direct and simple route with only a few detours and construction of this road is mostly complete now. The route keeps Highway 11 all the way and path of travel through 4 states, MS, AL, GA (just 10 miles of hard hills) and TN. When completed will have traveled about 300 miles. It takes about two days to complete.

Plan to hit hard the first day, because the hills at the end of this route are murderers and need some energy for them. Hence, recommend compensation Birmingham, Alabama the day before stopping. Ashville, AL is a good point about 2 miles away from the main road in the 411.

That is if you have the balls to do this trip in 2 days, in fact, maybe three or four more preferable for new pilots just to enjoy the sport of cycling thereof. It passes through the cities of more than enough space, apart from the equality of this as Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, GADDS-Atttalla and Fort Payne, Alabama. Hence, consider all this in 2006 on you bicycle across America.
