Fancy gyms and exercise can be an attractive way to get and stay fit, but sometimes simpler is better. That's what some residents of Dallas, Houston and Austin, have found as Texas residents to redouble the good old walking as their means of fitness.
Their commitment is to pay insurance, experts say, better health and more years of life – an average of 1.3 years. That's the advantage of 30 minutes of walking a day, according to studies on the subject. In fact, that half-hour walk per day accounted for 1.1 more years without cardiovascular disease compared with those who had low levels of activity.

If walking does not work for you, there are many Texans are embracing alternatives such as cycling or swimming. The key point is: get active.
Researchers are discovering additional benefits of walking, including reductions in the rate of glaucoma, an eye disease. Only those men who were over 45 years at the time of entry into the study clearly benefited from physical activity when they were colorectal cancers. The researchers theorize that walking, to speed the passage of ingested food through the colon, gives less time for carcinogens in food to be in contact with the intestinal lining.
While walking may help prevent or reduce the incidence of cancer, even something as simple as a cold can be annoying to want to see some relief of symptoms. Hiking, apparently, can help.
A study of 50 women divided into two groups: one whose members walked briskly for 45 minutes a day, 5 days a week, and a group of who did not exercise control.
