Can anyone recommend a good bike based on my needs?

I live in a traffic area suburbs but very high (northern Virginia). I want a bike ride to the gym (about 2 miles) and ASO to continue very long travel 20-30 miles a weekend. I'm sure I'll be riding mostly in the way but want the option of going to some more rough terrian paths, but I doubt they ever will do serious mountain biking (goes to the roots uneven terrian fat and downhill). Can anyone recommend a good starter bike? I will spend up to $ 1,000, but I hope you can get a good one for 400-600 and more I also mean rough terrian up a curb or down stairs without damaging my bike

Going off of cliffs, curbs and down stairs is discarded in a road bike! You will need some kind of mountain biking. But mountain bikes are more than road riding, and no areas high traffic. Are heavier than a road bike, and much slower. 20-30 miles is nothing! Sorry, but there is no such thing as one size fits all bike. If I were you buy me a road bike entry level and stick to paved roads. You can get a Trek 1000 for around $ 700.
