Thinking about a motorcycle trip to Maine. What are some good areas to visit?
I got a travel guide and the Acadia region looks quite interesting. I have never been up there so am looking for suggestions. Actually my biggest concern on the bike is finding enough gas stations as I would need to fill up approx. every 100 miles so don’t want to go too far into the boonies..
acadia national park is a great area– if you enter the actual park you can ride the 27 mile Park Loop Road with many viewpoints along the way and you end on top of Cadillac Mountain with great ocean and mountain views…fyi, that area can be very wet in summer time (lots of random passing rain showers and fog)..
..whatever you do stick to coastal maine and avoid inland maine…the coast is way nicer than the rural maine..
..gas stations are very plentiful, it wont be a concern–its extremely developed and acadia is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the country during july and august
other worthwhile stops are:
Southern mainearea:
portland–small lively city overrun by tourists in the summer–but in a good way..nice working waterfront, historic Old Port area with lots of pubs, eats, shops, etc
old orchard beach (especially if you’re on a bike, they’ll love you there!!!)– 7 miles of sandy beaches, boardwalk, amusement park area, beach bars, biker-ish bars
kennebunks–quaint coastal town, ritzy-ish (the Bush family lives there
boothbay harbor–quaint coastla town
while in acadia :
Bar Harbor–tourist coastal town
if you want to see the real rugged maine coast, start in acada and then go north up route 1 towards machias, cutler, and lubec/eastport…here you leave the tourists behind and see the real maine lobstermen and real fishing communities–no tourist towns
BUT i cant stress enough to be prepared for wet, rainy, foggy conditions especially in those northern coastal areas..be careful on a bike but it can be done –i’ve seen lots of bikers oyt there and the sun does come out too–its just really whacky coastal weather
