Where is the best place to ski off-piste and around Crested Butte area?

Crested Butte I just visited a couple of weeks and all that mountain bicycle. While the road around Gothic (camped at the campsite Gothic) I thought this would be a great area to do something mountain ski off-piste. The thing is I'm not sure if the road Gothic or campsite is open in winter. If anyone has better suggestions feel free to provide information. He had also thought about going out of Vail Pass, but I fear are the many people there.
