Mountain Biking Chicago
I thinking of doing the Chicago Triathlon (Sprint), What equipment do I need?
Background:
I’m in good shape, but I’m starting with a Sprint distance.
1. Do I need a wetsuit (Lake Michigan could be cold in the morning)? Would prefer not to get one if I don’t need one.
2. I have a basic mountain/Road bike. Should I upgrade to a newer bike? Again, my first time.. don’t want to spend a ton if I don’t need to.
Basically, what do I need for this?
Typically, Lake Michigan is warm enough by that time of year that a wetsuit isn’t necessary, although its a nice-to-have for safety purposes (buoyancy). Go down to Ohio St. beach a couple times before race day to get used to swimming open water.
As for bike equipment, you need a bike and a helmet. Assuming this is your first tri, I wouldn’t bother with a lot of upgrades. You’re not going to win first time out, or even be close in a race this big regardless of your ride.
Jan Caille does a great job preparing beginners for his race. GO TO THE COURSE TALK AT REGISTRATION!!! PAY ATTENTION!!!! There are rules in the sport of triathlon, very important for safety on the bike course. There are people trying to win the race, and you can cause a serious accident by zigging when you’re supposed to zag. I quit doing this race several years ago because there are too many beginners clogging the course. I got tired of dodging fat chicks on mountain bikes side by side yapping at 10mph, when I’m flying through the S curves on LSD at 35mph.
Run course? All you need is you and your running shoes.
Get there early. With that many people, it will take you a while to get in and get your transition area organized, then get back to the swim start. Sprint waves start before Olympic distance.

Edit: A further thought, Chicago is a poor choice for a first tri. There are dozens of smaller races throughout Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin that would give you a better feel for the sport itself without having to contend with thousands of people, or the hassles of parking and schlepping your stuff around downtown Chicago.

Edit 2: If you’re not already signed up for Chicago, you’re probably SOL anyway. The last few years it’s sold out in January.
