Best mountain bike for me?

I’m looking for a sturdy mountain bike that won’t break down easily. The current Mongoose bike I have is already somewhat damaged. The gear-shifting system is screwed up and the pedals are falling apart. What are some good brands I can look for? Most of my county has cracked/bumpy sidewalks and many hills.

i bought a specialized hardrock sport for about 350 dollars two years ago, this bike was excellent because it was extremely comfortable, had decent enough suspension for rough terrain and was affordable, also this bike is a TANK, it never seems to break. i have riden mine hard lately and nothing has gone wrong with it. i would reccommend this bike to anybody. although the suspension is not top of the line it should handle the cracks and bumps in the sidewalk like nothing.
