Mountain Biking Maryland

What laws must I be aware of to transport a handgun across state lines?

I would like to transport a handgun from my residence in Maryland, to the state of Vermont. Maryland has very strict gun laws. I would like to carry a handgun with me during my vacations to there, hiking and mountain biking.

I understand that Vermont is one of the safest states in the US, and that the handgun will more likely be dead weight in my pack than be used to protect myself from say, a black bear encounter.

Believe me when I say that I am by no means trigger happy, and not some, but ALL of the gun owners I met during my safety and training courses were far from irresponsible, and taught me a lot.

Maryland requires a permit to CCW, but not own. I’m confused as to the legality of me transporting my handgun from Maryland to Vermont.

I only know that I plan on carrying the handgun in a locked hard case, unloaded, with minimal ammunition in the trunk of my car. I have a clean criminal record, even zero moving violations in 10 years of driving.

What you plan on transporting is pretty good for the whole US. No matter what the state laws you can transport. You just cannot carry either open or concealed in certain jurisdictions. So limiting ourselves to the transport question.
As long as you can own a gun legally ( age, not nuts, not convicted felon, al the Fed rules) you can transport it.
If a semi auto with breech open no magazine in place, no ammo (including loaded mags) in the same case. The case need not be locked, in fact it does not need a case but that is handy.
Revolver, just empty with ammo separate.
The big thing to cover yourself in all states is the weapon must not be easily accessible. In the old days that meant trunk. Now with trunks often easy to get to from passenger compartment a locked case does the trick. Kill two birds with one stone and make sure the case is hard sided so if you transport by air you will be OK.
