Mountain Biking Where To Start? How to find events?

I recently took park in pedal for scotland and really enjoyed the challenge and ride. Where could i get more info on cycle events which would be fun but challenging? What other kind of stuff is fun that i should try?

Your best bet is to go to your local bike shop. They will know all of the series and events that are run in your area for all types of different riding. If you live in scotland, you’re in luck, as there is a lot of mountain bike races and seires of races that take place. They will be able to give you the info you need for these races. You will find that most races have several different classes. Normally Fun, Open, Sport and Elite.

You could start entering the fun class, as this is normally fewer laps of the course or an easier course. You get timed, and there’s a bit of a competitive element, but nobody takes it too seriously. As you get better, you can move up to open. This is pretty much for anyone to race in. You may even get to race along side some pro’s.

Your local bike shop should be able to tell you about any local trails where you can go for a burn by yourself or with any mates who are into mountain biking. Riding away from organised events is always good, as you can try new things, and see how fast you can take it over slippery off camber roots, for example. Not to mention, great fun, good exercise, and making the most of the beautiful unspoiled countryside that is all around most of us, and that many of us take for granted!

It’s also worth picking up some mountain bike mags, What Mountain bike and MBR are the better ones. MBUK is ok and Dirt is great, but aimed a bit more at the dirtjumping or downhill mountain bike scenes. These mags have loads of info on bikes and places to ride.

To sumarise:

-Go to your local bike shop and find out about local events / trail centres
-Find out about local woods / good trails to ride
-Pick up a copy of MBR or What MTB and have a read.
