Mountain Biking Virginia
Questions about Dallas?
I have several job offers in the following areas:
Atlanta, GA
Dallas, TX
Northern Virginia, Richmond/Arlington area.
If you have been to these cities, could you please answer the following questions about them as well? If not, just about Dallas.
1.) On a scale from 1 – 10, how is the nightlife and restaurants?
2.) What is the political climate? I don’t want to be around a bunch of Bible thumping, Christian Republicans. I know it’s TEXAS, but I figure since Dallas is a major city there may be more diversity.
3.) On a scale from 1- 10, how is the outdoors life? I enjoy mountain biking and hiking?
4.) On a scale from 1- 10, how are the sports, both or either professional and college?
5.) One a scale from 1 – 10, what is the quality of the cultural and historical sites?
THANK YOU!
1. I’m not much of a nightlife person, but the town of Addison (in north Dallas) has more restaurants per capita than any other city.
2. Dallas is not that conservative. Why do you assume that just because it’s Texas, it’s full of Bible thumping Republicans? Austin happens to be one of the more liberal cities in the country. Good job with the stereotypes. Dallas happens to have a good sized “gayborhood” also.
3. There are no mountains in Dallas, but there are places to walk and bike ride, around some of the lakes.
4. We’ve got the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, and Dallas Stars. For college, there is SMU but you never hear much about them.
5. Not very knowledgeable about that.
In general, I love Dallas. I moved here almost 20 years ago. The climate isn’t too bad, the summers can be really hot (over 100 for a month or 2), but the winters aren’t bad. It will freeze some and there is the occasional snowfall, but it doesn’t stay for more than a few days. Depending on what part of town you work in, there are plenty of suburbs to live in. There are very expensive parts of town, and very reasonable parts of town to live in. The northern suburbs (Plano, Frisco, McKinney) can be pricey, and if you work in Dallas, are a bit far to drive. There are no threats of hurricanes. Of course being in Texas, there is always the chance of tornadoes, and the news channels freak out a lot during severe thunderstorms, but there has not been a tornado in Dallas proper the entire time I’ve been here (there may have been some in outlying suburbs or nearer to Ft. Worth). The cost of living is not high. I would guess compared to Arlington VA, which is close to DC?, it is much lower. I live in a nice part of north Dallas, and my rent is 530, although I think I’ve got a really good deal. But if you’re getting a 1 bedroom, you can easily stay under 700-800. The 2000 sqaure foot town homes across the street from me go for 1000.
