The use of juice pickle as a defense against muscle cramps first attracted headlines when the Philadelphia Eagles credited pickle juice with their cramp-free win over the Cowboys Dallas in the largest one hundred degree heat of Texas. Rick Burkholder, the Eagles' head coach, calling it his "secret weapon." Cucumber Companies (like Mt. Olive Pickle, Vlasic Foods and Golden cucumber) state that pickle juice is similar to an isotonic beverage and can prevent muscle cramps caused by vigorous exercise.

Golden Pickle has even created a sports drink, appropriately named "Pickle Juice Sport." Pickle says Golden cucumber juice The sport has "about 30 times more electrolytes of Powerade and 15 times more than Gatorade." It is even approved by the Dallas Cowboys, Jason Witten.

This past weekend I participated in a bicycle race in Wichita Falls, TX, called the "Hotter N Hell. My distance was 100 miles in the hills and I think drink pickle juice helped me stay mentioned in the walk and then finish with a touch (for me). With temperatures reaching the 90s and humidity above about 80% there was a lot of sweating going on. Many of the riders had to be picked up by the SAG wagon and taken back to the finish line, unable to complete the journey. I started cramps in my upper quads about 68 miles. I stopped at the 70 mile zone support and consumes 24 ounces of pickle juice straight. After about 30 minutes I felt completely renewed and took off again. I stopped again in two of the three remaining areas of support and my drink bottle filled with juice brine. I have experienced nothing but cramps and closed the last 5 miles with an average of 20 mph. 24 ounces of pickle juice straight is higher than a 2 Oz. served suggests, but so did drink a little of my own energy drinking. However, I know the effect that I have received after drinking on 24 Oz was real. No more cramps was also real well.

JUSTIFICATION

So how does this work? Muscle cramps are caused by dehydration from exercise in hot weather and not drinking enough fluids. How can pickle juice help? When you sweat during exercise, you lose a lot of salt and minerals. These minerals and salt, also known as electrolytes. This loss electrolytes can cause muscle cramps, especially in hot and humid climates. The cells in the body to use electrolytes in the cell fluid maintain the voltage across their cell membranes and carry electrical impulses to other cells. In the case of my bike ride, had to be able to use my muscles in both a strip and the hiring of movement or muscle contractions. Pickle juice has a high salt or electrolyte content. Hence, drink pickle juice before and during exercise could provide enough salt in your body, your muscles do not cramp.

Confused? Not. Any fluid containing any or all of the four commonly considered electrolytes, sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium work to help prevent muscle cramps. Obviously, the better. Give it a try on a daily basis and see for yourself. Do not worry about how people look at the end pickleless flowing fluid laden jar to his lips.
