From Frisco to Muir Woods by bike?

I actually don’t know how far Muir Woods is from the Golden Gate Bridge, but it seems to me it’s about 20 km, isn’t it?

Do you think it’s a good idea going from SF to Muir Woods by bike, visiting also Sausalito? All in the same day, I mean.

It is only about 15 kilometers from the Golden Gate Bridge to Muir Woods. But the bike route goes through Sausalito and Mill Valley first, so that adds a couple kilometers to the total.

You’ll pass by some gorgeous scenery. There’s no doubt about that. However, most bike rental places do rate this route as “advanced.” I’ve seen German tourists do it in four hours. But I suspect most of the locals wouldn’t hold up quite as well. There are some fairly steep climbs and challenging downhill sections. After all, Muir Woods is situated on the slope of Mount Tam.

If you’ve never done any long distance or mountain biking before, then it is probably a good idea to stay closer to the shoreline. For example, the route around Richardson Bay to Tiburon is roughly the same distance. But it is flat and gentle. From Tiburon, you can board a ferry for either Angel Island or (back to) Downtown San Francisco. All ferries are equipped for bicycles.
